5 Tips for Creating a Kid’s Church Space!
When creating a space for your Kid’s Church, as close as a corner or as clear as an entire room, you must make it look like kids belong there! And a legitimate and intentional space gives parents the confidence to leave their children with you and your team.
Begin with the Bones
If the Church owns the building begin with the bones. Fresh paint on the walls and clean carpet or flooring underfoot. When it comes to the choice of paint colours there’s no need to grab tins of red, blue and yellow to splash around. Go with neutrals. An off-white paint colour adds warmth. Consider your Church’s aesthetic for additional colour. What colour is used in the logo? Paint a focal wall in that colour. Choose no more than 3 paint colours. A clean and organised Kid’s Church space makes a positive first impression. You can always build on good bones as the budget allows.
Signage
Using the same colour palette create signage for your Kid’s Church space. If the Church rents a space, you’ll need portable signage like banners or A-frames. You’ll need directional or wayfinding signage (toilets, check-in) if you have a permanent home. A dimensional logo of your Kid’s Church name looks great on a wall.
Décor
Remember, this is the Kid’s Church space, not your home. Avoid knickknacks and trends. You need timeless and targeted décor that reflects the aesthetic of the Church. Rugs and cushions are great for both renter’s and permanent kid’s spaces.
Equipment
Avoid clutter and present a clean and organised space. If you rent use cubes on wheels, trolleys and carts for sign-in, craft supplies and toys. Everything needs to have a place so you can set up and tear down quickly. Use cupboards with doors if you have a permanent space. Kid-sized tables and chairs are a worthwhile investment.
Safety
Safety and intentionality equal trust. It’s a good idea to have a door or divider between common areas and the Kid’s Church. (If you can’t have either use a volunteer to be security!) Everything in your Kid’s Church space needs to be childproofed.
