While holidaying at the beach, my husband and I were strolling along the main street of a coastal town, doing what everyone does on holiday — wandering slowly, peeking into shops, enjoying the sunshine. As we passed a café, a sandwich board on the footpath caught my eye.

“Life‑changing egg and bacon roll.”

That’s quite a claim for a breakfast item. A part of me almost wanted to buy it to see whether this roll truly delivered. I knew it was all marketing, of course — a cheeky attempt to make hungry tourists stop and spend. But still, the words lingered with me.

How sad, really, that anyone (tongue in cheek or not) could look to a savoury breakfast roll to change their life. It made me think about how easily people reach for small comforts, quick fixes, or tasty distractions when what they actually need is something deeper, steadier, and truly transformative.

Children do this too. They look for life‑changing moments in the wrong places — a new toy, a special treat, a fun experience. Adults aren’t much different. Yet the real change we long for doesn’t come wrapped in wax paper from a café. Real change comes from Jesus.

Children’s Ministry and the Search for “Life‑Changing” Moments

In children’s ministry, I want to create big, exciting, unforgettable experiences. I want our Children’s Church programs to sparkle. I want the lessons to “wow.” I want kids to walk out saying, “That was amazing!”  But here’s the truth: Kids don’t need amazing. Kids need authentic.  They need leaders who genuinely love Jesus. They need Scripture taught clearly and joyfully. They need relationships that are steady, safe, and full of grace. They need moments that point them to the One who actually transforms lives.

A bacon and egg roll might fill a hungry stomach. Only Jesus can fill a hungry soul.

What Truly Changes a Child’s Life?

1. Consistent, Christ‑centred adults

Children are shaped far more by faithful presence than flashy programs. A leader who shows up week after week, listens, prays, and cares — that’s life‑changing.

2. Scripture taught simply and clearly

Kids don’t need complicated theology. They need bite‑sized truth they can understand, remember, and live out.

3. Opportunities to wonder

Children learn through curiosity. When we let them explore, ask questions, and discover God’s goodness for themselves, faith becomes real.

4. A community that models grace

Kids watch how adults treat each other. A ministry culture filled with kindness, forgiveness, and joy teaches them more than any craft or game ever could.

5. Jesus at the centre

Not the program. Not the theme. Not the decorations. Not the “wow factor.” Jesus.

He is the One who changes lives — gently, deeply, eternally.

A Word to Leaders and Volunteers

We need to create a space where Jesus is seen, heard, and honoured.  Children don’t need a bacon and egg roll promising transformation. They need the Saviour who restores hearts, renews minds, and invites them into a life that genuinely transforms.  And your faithfulness, your warmth, your willingness to serve — are part of how He does it.
