Bible Wonder for Kids

My daily devotional has brought me once again to Psalm 119, and I know I’ll be camped here for quite a while. It’s a Psalm I genuinely enjoy. Its great theme is the glory of Scripture—God’s Word shining in connection with God Himself.  And if there’s one thing I want children to grasp early, it’s this:  the Bible in not just a book; it is God speaking.

Psalm 119 is enormous, but children don’t need to understand its length to appreciate its heartbeat. They can feel its passion. They can sense its delight. They can learn its benefits. And they can grow up honouring Scripture every time they gather with God’s people.

1. Scripture Gives Light

Children live in a world full of confusing messages. Psalm 119 repeatedly tells us that God’s Word gives understanding, clarity, and direction. Kids don’t need theological jargon—they need to know that the Bible helps them see what is true, what is good, and what is wise.

Teaching moment: Hold up a torch and turn off the lights. “Just like this torch helps you see where you’re going, God’s Word helps you see what’s right.”

2. Scripture Protects Their Hearts

Psalm 119 speaks of hiding God’s Word in our hearts so we won’t wander into sin. Children need to know that Scripture isn’t just information—it’s protection. It guards their choices, their friendships, their attitudes, and their inner world.

Teaching moment: Give each child a small cardboard “shield.” “This shield protects you in pretend battles. God’s Word protects you in real life.”

3. Scripture Strengthens Them When Life Is Hard

Psalm 119 is honest about trouble, sadness, and pressure. It shows that God’s Word brings comfort, hope, and strength. Children face real challenges—school stress, friendship issues, fears, disappointments. They need to know that Scripture is a place to run, not just a book to read.

Teaching moment: Invite children to name things that make them feel worried. Then remind them: “God’s Word gives strength when we feel weak.”

4. Scripture Brings Joy

Psalm 119 is full of delight. The writer rejoices in God’s commands, celebrates His promises, and finds joy in obedience. Children should grow up knowing that the Bible is not boring—it is a treasure chest.

Teaching moment: Hide small “treasures” around the room. “Finding treasure is exciting. God’s Word is full of treasure for your heart.”

5. Scripture Is Immense — and Worth Wondering At

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and that alone sparks curiosity. But its immensity is more than length—it’s depth. Children can be taught to marvel at how big, rich, and beautiful God’s Word is. Wonder is a spiritual discipline, and kids are naturally good at it.

Teaching moment: Show a giant scroll or long ribbon. “Psalm 119 is long because the writer couldn’t stop talking about how amazing God’s Word is.”

Honouring the Bible in Every Service

If we want children to value Scripture, we must model honour for Scripture. Not occasionally. Not when convenient. Every service.

Here are simple ways to build a culture of honour:

  • Carry the Bible visibly and respectfully.
  • Read Scripture aloud with joy, not monotone.
  • Use physical Bibles, not just screens.
  • Let children see leaders open the Bible first, not last.
  • Celebrate memory verses as victories.
  • Connect every lesson, craft, drama, and game back to Scripture.

Children notice what adults honour. If we honour the Bible, they will too.

A Final Encouragement

Psalm 119 invites us to love Scripture because it reveals God Himself. When children learn the benefits of God’s Word—light, protection, strength, joy—and when they see us honour it in every service, they grow up knowing that the Bible is not just part of church. It is the heartbeat of faith.
