Christmas Rush! Shoebox Appeal

Okay, it’s not the McAllister’s running through the airport kind of rush.  But you only have until the 26th of October to leave a Christmas shoebox at one of nearly 300 local drop-off locations around Australia.

What is Operation Christmas Child?

The Shoebox appeal is part of Operation Christmas Child, a Samaritan’s Purse International Relief initiative.  It is a hands-on way for you to bless children in need globally by filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and fun gifts. The shoeboxes are collected and distributed in the name of Jesus Christ to children living in vulnerable situations.  The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to work with local churches to show God’s love tangibly.

Sourcing Shoeboxes

I have empty shoeboxes in my wardrobe but this year I opted to buy a pre-printed Christmas box from a cheap shop.  Turns out my shoebox wrapping skills are not what they used to be!   Next year when you’re not so rushed you could order a pre-printed shoebox online from Operation Christmas Child.

Choose Who Your Gift Is For

Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category:

2-4 years

5-9 years

10-14 years

Choose What to Put Inside

  • A WOW item (something fun)
  • Personal care items
  • School supplies
  • Crafts and activities
  • Toys
  • Clothing and accessories
  • A personal note if you wish

Do Not Include…

  • Items that leak or melt (including toothpaste)
  • Food or lollies, medicines, vitamins or seeds
  • Second-hand or damaged items
  • Breakable items
  • Scary or war-related items
  • Gambling-related items
  • Religious literature – Operation Christmas Child provides tracts, Bibles and books in children’s language!

Pray, Label and Donate

Pray for the child who will receive your gift. Label the shoebox with the gender and age of the child for whom you have purchased items. Volunteers do as much as they can, but you will need to donate $12.50 per shoebox, which covers collection, processing, and shipping.
