Enemy Chatter: How Satan likes to distract us
I am embarrassed to say I failed my driving test…twice. I’ve never talked about it. Even years after passing, seeing a learner driver would stir up feelings of post-traumatic stress disorder. When both my children successfully passed their driving test, on their first attempt, it went some way in soothing my feelings of distress. Turns out I was a calm and competent driving teacher. In all the years I’ve been driving I’ve only had one speeding ticket and been involved in one accident (in which I was rear ended). So, now there is considerable mileage between me and the horrifying events of my driving tests, I’m ready to share my experiences without crying.
My particular Department of Main Roads examiner had a devious ploy to encourage failure. He’d talk. Yak, yak, yak. What did I do for work? How did I like it? Where did I live? How did I like it there? Sounds a teensy bit creepy now I write about it but what he was really doing was distracting me. I was raised a polite young woman so naturally I tried to answer his questions. Then he’d say, ‘You didn’t indicate back there. Why was that?’
Finally, I caught on. On my third attempt I said to him, ‘I don’t mean to be rude but I really need you to be quiet when I am driving.’ He smirked at me and that day I passed. (Don’t think for one second he was just being diligent. He made me do a parallel park behind a kombi van chocked up on Besser blocks. All my geometric sight guides went out the window. To this day I don’t know how I did it. I have NEVER parallel parked since.)
The reason I remembered my driving tests was because I was thinking about how Satan loves to distract us. Yak, yak, yak. He uses a constant steam of chatter to remind us of past sin and the times we let God down. He tells us we’ll never be good enough mentally, physically or spiritually. He says we’re a disappointment. Anything to take our attention off what we should be focusing on. We have to catch on to what he is doing and tell him to be quiet!
