Getting God’s Opinion!
Children’s Church leaders are problem‑solvers by necessity. Every week we’re rearranging chairs, adjusting craft tables, rethinking traffic flow, and trying to make sure no child ends up wearing the glue or something much worse. So here’s a little story that reminded me just how much God cares about the tiny, practical details of ministry life.
There was a quandary in the Church kitchen. The flow from the self‑serve tea and coffee station to the urns was convoluted and, frankly, unsafe for congregants who fellowshipped over a cuppa after the service. The kitchen itself was a cobbled‑together arrangement: 35‑year‑old built‑in laminate cabinetry joined to donated freestanding furniture from who‑knows‑where. Usable, yes. Practical, no. And that impracticality showed every Sunday as people tried to navigate the hot‑drink obstacle course without ‘baptising’ themselves—or each other—in boiling water.
Our leadership team thought long and hard about the problem. We tried various configurations. None worked. It was frustrating.
I remember the Monday morning when I plonked into my chair and said to God, “You know the answer to where the urn should be.” And I vividly recall the thought that popped into my head a day later: Move the fridge.
I was stunned. None of us had considered shifting the empty drink fridge from its pride of place in front of two power points. It was a see‑through, double‑doored, shop‑style fridge—noisy, rarely used, and mostly just taking up space. The more I thought about it, the more excited I became. Removing it would open up significant room for a high table where the urns could sit and boil away contentedly.
I explained the epiphany to the Pastor and leadership team the following Sunday, and we implemented the idea immediately—with wonderful results. Well… except for one or two kitchen‑volunteer diehards who struggled to let the old fridge go just in case.
It’s a funny little story, and I’m recounting it playfully, but I was genuinely amazed that God answered my request. I should not have been. He cared about the placement of the urns. He cared because He loves us and wanted everybody safe. God is interested in every little detail of our lives, and getting His opinion is best!
God is interested in every detail of Children’s Church.
He cares about:
- where the craft tables go
- how to organise the sign‑in area
- which volunteer needs encouragement
- how to make the room feel welcoming
- and yes—even where equipment should sit
When we pause and ask Him, He often answers in the simplest, most practical ways. Sometimes it’s a whisper. Sometimes it’s a nudge. Sometimes it’s a fridge‑moving epiphany. We set up spaces. We manage crowds. We create safe environments. And God delights in helping us with all of it.
Our Church installed a new kitchen two years ago. We now have a commercial-grade stainless steel wonder with all mod cons. The flow is brilliant. In fact, when I sat down to write, I had to think hard to remember how the old set-up even looked. It feels like a distant memory. And let me tell you – nobody misses the old drink fridge.
