God is the Father of Lights!
Why We Walk in Light, Not Darkness
There’s a reason James 1:17 has such a steadying, joy‑filled ring to it. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
That single verse gives us a worldview, a posture, and a way of living that is radically different from the culture around us—especially when October rolls around and the world leans into the darkness of Halloween. This isn’t about fear. It’s about remembering who our Father is.
The Father of Lights: What That Means for Us
1. God’s Kingdom Has No Shadows
James paints a picture of God as pure, unwavering light. No flicker. No dimming. No shifting shadows.
Shadows come from things blocking the light. But nothing blocks God’s goodness. Nothing interrupts His character. Nothing darkens His presence.
When children learn this, something powerful settles in their hearts: God is never moody, unpredictable, or spooky. He is steady, bright, and safe.
2. Light Reveals What Is True
Kids live in a world full of mixed messages—fear-based entertainment, creepy imagery, and celebrations that glamorise darkness. But God’s light helps us see clearly.
Light shows us:
- what is real
- what is safe
- what is good
- what is worth celebrating
Darkness hides, distorts, and confuses. Light reveals, clarifies, and comforts.
3. God’s Gifts Are Always Good
James doesn’t say some gifts. He says every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of Lights.
Fear is not His gift. Confusion is not His gift. Darkness is not His gift.
Courage, joy, wisdom, peace, salvation—these are His gifts. And they shine.
So Why Don’t We Celebrate the Darkness of Halloween?
Not because we’re scared of it. Not because we’re judging people who do. Not because we’re trying to be different for the sake of being different. We don’t celebrate Halloween because:
A. We belong to the Light
Children of God are drawn to what reflects His nature. If He is the Father of Lights, then His children celebrate what is bright, good, life-giving, and true.
B. Darkness is not our story
Halloween themes—fear, death, horror, spirits, monsters—don’t align with the gospel story. They don’t reflect the character of God. They don’t point children toward hope.
C. We protect the hearts of children
Kids are impressionable. Their imaginations are tender. Their spiritual foundations are forming.
We choose celebrations that build courage, not fear; clarity, not confusion; joy, not dread.
D. We honour the One who gives good gifts
If every good gift comes from the Father of Lights, then our celebrations should reflect His goodness.
We don’t need darkness to have fun. We don’t need fear to feel excitement. We don’t need spooky themes to create memories.
We have the Light of the World.
What We Celebrate Instead
Churches and families can create traditions that shine:
- Light Parties
- Praise Nights
- Glow-in-the-dark Scripture hunt
- Neighbourhood kindness projects
- Family nights celebrating God’s goodness
These aren’t “alternatives” out of obligation. They are celebrations that match our identity.
A Final Word for Parents and Leaders
Children don’t just learn from what we teach. They learn from what we celebrate.
When we choose light over darkness, clarity over confusion, and goodness over fear, we are quietly shaping their spiritual instincts.
We are teaching them: “You belong to the Father of Lights. His goodness never casts a shadow. Walk in His brightness.”
