Labour Shortages

When Jesus looked at the crowds, “He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36). That moment of compassion moved Him to say something that still echoes through every church, every ministry, and every generation:

“The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.” “Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest field.” (Matthew 9:37–38)

If there is any ministry today that feels this verse deeply, it’s Children’s Ministry. The harvest is enormous — children hungry for love, stability, truth, and the presence of Jesus — but the labourers often feel painfully few.  And yet, Jesus didn’t respond with panic. He responded with compassion and prayer.

1. Why the Labour Shortage Feels So Real

Children’s Ministry is one of the most volunteer‑intensive ministries in the church. Every week requires:

  • Safe ratios
  • Leaders who can build trust
  • Helpers who can manage the room
  • Teachers who can communicate God’s Word
  • Worship leaders, tech helpers, check‑in volunteers
  • And people who simply show up with a smile and a heart ready to serve

But the reality is:

  • Families are busier
  • Volunteers feel stretched
  • Many adults feel unqualified
  • Some fear long‑term commitment
  • Others don’t realise how vital Children’s Ministry truly is

It’s not that people don’t care. It’s that they don’t always see the harvest the way Jesus sees it.

2. What Jesus Saw — And What We Must See

Matthew 9:36 tells us Jesus saw the people. He didn’t see a crowd. He saw individuals. He saw need. He saw potential. He saw hearts ready for the Kingdom.  Children’s Ministry is the same.

Behind every child is:

  • A story
  • A family
  • A future
  • A calling
  • A heart that can be shaped for Jesus

When volunteers see children the way Jesus sees them, something shifts. Serving becomes less about filling rosters and more about shepherding the next generation.

3. Why Volunteers Matter More Than Ever

Children’s Ministry volunteers are not babysitters. They are:

  • Seed‑planters
  • Faith‑builders
  • Safe adults
  • Spiritual guides
  • Culture‑shapers
  • Kingdom labourers

A single volunteer can:

  • Change a child’s week
  • Speak life into a discouraged heart
  • Model Jesus in a way a child never forgets
  • Create a safe place for a child who has none
  • Help a child hear God’s voice for the first time

4. Jesus’ Solution to the Labour Shortage

Jesus didn’t say:

  • “Try harder.”
  • “Recruit more aggressively.”
  • “Guilt people into helping.”

He said:

“Ask the Lord of the harvest…”

The solution to a volunteer shortage is not pressure — it’s prayer.

Prayer prepares hearts. Prayer awakens compassion. Prayer stirs calling. Prayer aligns people with God’s timing. Prayer opens eyes to the harvest right in front of them.

When we pray for labourers, we are not begging God. We are agreeing with Him.

5. How to Pray for Labourers in Children’s Ministry

Here are practical, faith‑filled ways to pray:

1. Pray for eyes to see the harvest

“Lord, open our eyes to the children who need shepherds.”

2. Pray for hearts to be stirred

“Holy Spirit, awaken compassion in adults who have never considered serving.”

3. Pray for confidence

“Father, remove fear and replace it with courage and joy.”

4. Pray for the right people in the right roles

“Lord of the harvest, send the labourers You have chosen.”

5. Pray for long‑term fruit

“Jesus, let every volunteer become a spiritual anchor for the children they serve.”

6. Pray for unity and joy in the team

“God, build a team that loves serving together.”

7. Pray for protection

“Cover our volunteers and children with Your peace and safety.”

6. What Happens When We Pray

Churches that pray for labourers see:

  • Volunteers who “just felt prompted” to sign up
  • Adults who discover gifts they never knew they had
  • Parents who step in because God stirred their hearts
  • Teens who rise up as leaders
  • Retirees who find new purpose
  • A culture of serving that becomes contagious

Prayer doesn’t just fill rosters. Prayer builds a movement of labourers.

7. A Final Encouragement

If you’re leading Children’s Ministry and feeling the weight of the labour shortage, remember:  Jesus felt it first. He understands it. And He gave us the solution.  You are not alone. The harvest is His. The labourers are His. And He is faithful to send them.  Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep sowing. The Lord of the harvest is at work.
