No Longer Infants!
Emotional Maturity for Kids… and Leaders
Children feel big feelings – loudly, suddenly, and sometimes all at once. And if we’re honest, sometimes leaders do too. A chaotic morning, a disruptive child, a last‑minute curriculum change, a missing volunteer… emotions can flare. Even the most seasoned leader can feel their patience wobble. But Scripture gives us a clear, steadying reminder:
“…that we may no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind…” (Ephesians 4:14)
This verse isn’t just about doctrine. It’s also about emotional steadiness, the kind that keeps us anchored when the waves of Children’s Ministry roll in.
Below is a practical, heart‑level look at what it means for volunteers to model maturity so children can learn it too.
1. Kids Get Tossed by Waves – That’s Normal
Children are still learning how to name their feelings, regulate their reactions, and choose wise responses. Their ‘waves’ look like:
- Sudden tears over a craft not going right
- Frustration when someone takes their seat
- Excitement that becomes chaos
- Fear that shows up as silliness or withdrawal
They are meant to be learning. They are meant to be growing. They are meant to be guided. They are not the ones called to emotional maturity, we are.
2. Leaders Must Be the Steady Ones in the Room
Kids don’t need perfect leaders. They need anchored ones. When we remain calm, gentle, and consistent, we show children what it looks like to be ‘no longer infants’ in our reactions. Our steadiness becomes their safety.
Emotional maturity in leaders looks like:
- Responding instead of reacting
- Lowering our voice instead of raising it
- Pausing before correcting
- Choosing compassion over irritation
- Staying patient even when the room feels wild
Children learn emotional regulation by watching it long before they learn it by doing it.
3. Immature Leadership Creates Immature Rooms
When leaders let their feelings run the show, the whole environment shifts. A leader who is easily frustrated creates anxious kids. A leader who is unpredictable creates insecure kids. A leader who is harsh creates defensive kids. A leader who is overwhelmed creates chaotic kids.
But a leader who is emotionally mature creates:
- Peace
- Safety
- Trust
- Confidence
- Stability
Kids flourish under steady leadership.
4. Maturity Doesn’t Mean Emotionless – It Means Spirit‑Led
Ephesians 4:14 doesn’t call us to suppress emotion. It calls us to grow up in Christ so our emotions serve His purposes.
Spirit‑led maturity looks like:
- Feeling emotions fully
- Bringing them to Jesus quickly
- Responding with wisdom
- Choosing gentleness
- Staying anchored in truth
- Remembering the mission: to disciple children
We don’t lead from our feelings. We lead from our faith.
5. Practical Ways Volunteers Can Model Maturity
Here are simple, volunteer‑friendly habits that help you embody Ephesians 4:14:
- Arrive prayed up — ask God for calmness and clarity
- Slow your pace — rushing creates tension
- Use a soft voice — it resets the room
- Keep instructions simple — clarity prevents frustration
- Take a breath before correcting — it protects your tone
- Step aside if overwhelmed — tag a teammate for a moment
- Celebrate small wins — it builds joy and resilience
6. When Leaders Grow Up, Kids Grow Up Too
Children imitate what they see. When they see adults who:
- stay calm under pressure
- apologise when wrong
- speak kindly
- handle conflict gently
- show patience
- choose self‑control
…they begin to practise those same behaviours. Your emotional maturity becomes their discipleship pathway.
A Final Encouragement
Children’s Ministry is full of waves – emotional, spiritual, practical, and unexpected. But you are not tossed around. You are anchored in Christ. As you serve, teach, comfort, and guide, remember: You are called to be the steady one. You are called to be the grown‑up in the room. You are called to model what it looks like to be ‘no longer infants.’ And when you do, children learn how to grow up in Jesus too.
