The Call of the Cooee and Trusting God’s Promises

This morning I heard the first cooee call of the spring.  The male cooee bird (the Eastern Koel) will continue to call throughout the spring and summer, until the cooler weather returns, when it will wing its way back to New Guinea.

You can hear the cooee here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_QzZCvQykE

To me, and many Australians, the call of the cooee bird is a promise.  That clear, strong and remarkably loud call is a declaration and assurance that particular things are going to happen.  When we hear its call we know spring has arrived, school holidays are imminent, and Christmas is around the corner.  That’s why a bird call fills me with such joy.

How much more should I rejoice over the promises of God!

If a mere bird call can produce such a thrill how much more should the promises of God, who created the cooee bird, thrill me?  Because when God makes a promise you can be assured it is a clear and strong declaration He will make it will come to pass.  There are over 8000 promises in the Bible and God has the power and will to fulfil His promises if we receive them by faith, if we persevere and are obedient.

When looking over past Bible Lessons I was amazed how many touched on the promises of God and His faithfulness.

My family are used to my excitement when I hear the call of the cooee bird for the first time in spring.  Now they can’t hear it without associating me with it.  I imagine that when my grandchildren grow up they will hear a cooee bird call and say, ‘Remember how much Nanna loved the cooee bird?’  But how I long for them to read a promise from the Bible and say, ‘Remember Nanna had a story about God keeping His promises?’  I hope these Bible Lessons will help make God and His wonderful promises unforgettable to the children He has given you.

God bless you,
