Thrown in at the Deep End!
When I was a kid, I was thrown in the deep end—literally. I grew up on a farm eight kilometres out of town, and in summer, when our creek had mostly dried up, we’d sometimes head to the public pool. I was a mediocre swimmer and stuck to the shallow end.
One day, though, I must have been caught up in a game that had me out of the water near the deep end. And you guessed it—I was suddenly thrown straight in. It was a classic sink-or-swim moment, and to my own surprise, I popped up, swam to the surface, and made it to the side of the pool without any trouble at all.
From that day on, the deep end never worried me again.
Every Children’s Church volunteer has a story. Somewhere between the missing craft supplies, the unexpected visitors, the lesson you thought you printed, and the child who suddenly needs the toilet, there comes a moment when you realise:
You’ve just been thrown into the deep end.
Maybe the team leader called in sick.
Maybe the roster was wrong.
Maybe you were “just helping with check-in” and now you’re teaching the entire class.
Whatever the reason, you’re standing there—heart racing, kids arriving, and no time to panic.
But here’s the good news: you can swim. And often, you’ll surprise yourself with how well you do.
Let’s walk through how to survive—and even thrive—when you’re tossed into the deep end at Children’s Church.
Take a Breath Before You Dive
Your brain works better when it’s not in panic mode.
Even a three-second pause helps.
- Inhale slowly
- Exhale even slower
- Remind yourself: “God is here. I’m not alone.”
Keep It Simple—Simpler Than You Think
When you’re unprepared, simplicity becomes your best friend.
- A single Bible verse
- One clear idea
- One short activity
- One prayer
Children remember simple truths far more than complicated explanations. If all you teach is “Jesus loves you and He’s with you,” you’ve already given them gold.
Use What’s in Your Hands
Look around the room.
You’d be amazed what you can turn into a lesson.
- A chair becomes a storytelling prop
- A ball becomes a memory verse game
- Paper and pencils become a craft
- Your own childhood story becomes a teaching moment
Turn the Kids Into Helpers
Children love responsibility. When you’re scrambling, let them help you.
- “Can you hand these out?”
- “Who wants to act this part?”
- “Can someone draw what happens next in the story?”
Suddenly, you’re not drowning—you’re leading a team.
Embrace the Holy Spirit’s Gentle Nudge
Some of the best Children’s Church moments happen when the plan goes out the window.
When you’re thrown in the deep end:
- You listen more closely
- You depend more fully
- You notice what the kids actually need
Sometimes the Spirit whispers,
“Slow down.”
“Tell them that story.”
“Pray for that child.”
Laugh—It’s Your Life Jacket
Children’s ministry is gloriously unpredictable. If you can laugh, you can lead.
- Laugh when the craft collapses
- Laugh when the puppet’s head falls off
- Laugh when you forget the character’s name
- Laugh when the kids correct you (because they will)
Joy disarms chaos.
Debrief With Someone Afterwards
Surviving the deep end is one thing. Growing from it is another.
After the session:
- Share the story with a teammate
- Celebrate the wins
- Learn from the wobbly bits
- Thank God for carrying you through
These moments build resilience—and great stories for later.
Remember: You’re Not Failing—You’re Learning
Every seasoned children’s ministry leader has been thrown in the deep end. It’s practically a rite of passage.
And every time you survive, you grow:
- More confident
- More flexible
- More creative
- More dependent on God
- More aware of what really matters
You’re not just “getting through.” You’re becoming the kind of leader who can handle anything. Being thrown in the deep end at Children’s Church isn’t a disaster.
It’s an invitation. An invitation to trust God. To discover hidden strengths. To connect with kids in real, unscripted ways. To realise you can swim—far better than you thought. And who knows? One day you’ll be the calm, smiling leader helping someone else survive their first deep-end moment.
