Cooee Kid’s Catchup #3
Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads!
Do You Need a Dad?
The lesson begins with two suggested warm-up games: a Shaving Race and a Father’s Tie Race. The Bible Lesson is from John 14 when Phillip asks Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus responds, ‘Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.’ So what does Jesus look like? The lesson teaches that Father God wants children to know He is a loving, merciful and trustworthy Dad who loves them and they can rely on Him! The children step into Dad’s shoes to ‘walk out ‘the Memory Verse, and as a game, they must run a BBQ relay race. All this is followed by a Card with Comb craft suitable for a wide range of ages.

Heart Stricken
A long-awaited sequel (by me anyway) to the Bible lessons, ‘Heart Trouble’ and ‘God Chooses a King’. It is the story of a heart-stricken King David when his sin is exposed by the Prophet Nathan. As with the previous lessons, a large red heart cut from a piece of felt is used to attach the story’s illustrations with a Velcro dot. The lesson ends with a reading of Psalm 51. The children learn God will forgive their sins no matter how bad they are. A heart jigsaw puzzle is used to teach them the Memory Verse from 1 John 1:9. Then it’s time for a game of Circle Seeker (a version of blind man’s bluff) and then pop-up heart puppets to finish.

Jesus, Our Compassionate Saviour
Children learn that compassion goes deeper than kindness and sympathy. It means being deeply moved to action, and that’s what Jesus did. The Bible lesson combines several instances when Jesus was moved by compassion. Now it’s our turn to show compassion. Why not set up a Compassion Project for your kids? The Memory Verse is a clothesline competition with the children racing to hang the washing in the correct order to read the verse. Play a game of Compassion Quest, a relay game to get medical supplies, water and food to teammates. Make and fill a container of compassion, and a card to giveaway.

God’s Got an Army!
A Vietnam Veteran preached a sermon about being in God’s army and it fired me up to write this lesson. Make dog-tags as a warm-up activity while children arrive. Begin the lesson with the old favourite song, God’s Got an Army. Children learn they do not fight flesh and blood but spiritual principalities and powers and that they must get their boots on the ground for the Gospel! The Memory Verse is a missing in action hunt using toy soldiers. Why not issue ration packs for Morning Tea? There are 6 games to choose from including parachute games. End the program with some medals made from cardboard and ribbon. The template is provided.
