Everyone Makes Mistakes! A Kid’s Church Lesson
I recently sent a photo to my grown son. It was of a newspaper headline from our local paper that read, ‘Children’s Underwear Blocks Victoria Point Pump Station’.
‘It wasn’t me this time,’ he texted back.
Now a father of two, my son loves to tell his children about the shenanigans he got up to when he was a kid. Some of which I had no idea about. A story that makes them giggle is about the time he flushed his undies!
The newspaper article confirms what those of us in Kid’s Ministry know only too well. There are many things about children that have not changed. And why do kids flush their undies? They’re trying to hide their mistakes.
God is Bigger than Your Mistakes!
I’ve written many lessons about the love of God and one I particularly enjoyed is titled, ‘God is Bigger than Your Mistakes’. The lesson introduces ‘Daryl the Postie’ who has a very unusual stamp collection. ‘Daryl’s Really Different Stamp Collection’ is a collection of stamps that have been produced with mistakes in them. But far from becoming worthless the stamps are now worth thousands of dollars!
Daryl hand delivers a wrongly addressed envelope to the Kid’s Church, and helps the Leader teach the children that even when they make mistakes, God still loves them and wants to use them. God is faithful. God is sovereign. God is with them. The Bible story of Samson is used to illustrate this.
The lesson includes ideas for a postal delivery service relay to find the words of the Memory Verse (whatever the weather). The verse is from Romans 8:28 ‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.’
At game time children play ‘I Wrote a Letter to My Love’ and for craft make a card to post to someone. They might like to do some ink or paint stamping to decorate it.
