The Little Mark that Changes Everything
I have a friend who owns an antique booth. She is one of seventy dealers tucked under one roof in an old inner-city theatre. As a reseller, she is always on the hunt, scanning shelves in op shops (thrift shops if you’re American.) Shopping with her is an adventure. While I admire a pretty pattern or the colour of a cup, plate or vase, she is flipping them over. She is looking for a brand. A maker’s mark that tells her the truth about the piece she’s holding. It tells her who made it. It tells her where it came from. It tells her whether it’s common or rare, mass‑produced or handcrafted. It tells her whether it’s worth treasuring. One tiny mark… and suddenly the whole story changes.
Children Carry a Mark Too
Not a stamp on the bottom of a plate. Not a logo or a label. But something far more precious. Scripture tells us that every child is made by God, known by God, and loved by God. They carry His fingerprints. His design. His intention. His image. They belong to Him long before they ever know His name. Just like a potter presses a mark into clay before it’s fired, God imprints His identity on children before they take their first breath. They’re the Maker’s mark. Psalm 139
- “You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
- “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
- “You are mine.”
Belonging Comes Before Behaviour
Children’s ministry can sometimes drift into “teaching kids how to behave.” But belonging comes before behaviour. A porcelain plate doesn’t become valuable because it behaves well. It’s valuable because of who made it. In the same way, children don’t earn belonging with God by being good, quiet, polite, or helpful. They belong because God made them, loves them, and invites them into His family through Jesus. Our job isn’t to polish them up. Our job is to help them discover the mark they already carry.
Helping Children See the Maker’s Mark
When a child learns a Bible verse, hears a story of Jesus, or experiences love from a leader, something beautiful happens. They begin to recognise the mark. They begin to understand:
- I am made by God.
- I am loved by God.
- I belong to God.
- Jesus invites me into His family.
And once a child knows who they belong to, everything else flows from that identity — courage, kindness, forgiveness, faith, purpose. Belonging shapes behaviour. Identity shapes choices. Love shapes lives.
A Final Thought for Leaders
I am reminded of Paul’s words in Galatians 6:17:
“From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand marks of Jesus.”
Paul wasn’t talking about a tattoo or a logo. He was talking about the visible evidence, his scars, his sacrifices, his choices, his lifestyle, that showed who he belonged to. His life had been so shaped by Jesus that anyone who “turned him over” could see the Maker’s mark. He was branded by grace. Marked by mercy. Stamped by the Saviour.
If ever we have to bear the Maker’s mark through persecution, as many of our brothers and sisters in other countries do, God will not leave us to carry it alone. He promises strength, presence, and honour in the very places that feel frightening. It’s not that God wants us to suffer but He refuses to waste it.
Next time you see a piece of porcelain, maybe in an op‑shop, maybe in your own kitchen, flip it over. Look for the mark. And remember: Every child who walks into your ministry carries a mark too. A divine one. A deliberate one. A Maker’s mark that whispers, “This one is Mine.” Our calling is simply to help them see it.
