Kids Across Cultures!
From the sun-drenched plains of the outback to the bustling streets of Tokyo, the laughter of children carries a familiar rhythm—a melody of wonder, curiosity, and joy. No matter their language or landscape, children across cultures share common ground: kids are kids, wherever they are!
If you’d like a program that’s about where I’m from, Australia, then here’s a Super Sunday lesson for you: Australia Day Spectacular! https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Australia-Day-Spectacular.pdf
A Universal Curiosity
Children everywhere are born explorers. Whether it’s peeking under rocks, asking a cascade of “whys,” or dreaming up worlds only they can see, curiosity is their shared compass. This thirst for discovery connects a child in Kenya scribbling in the dust with one in Canada building castles in the snow. Intrigue children using ‘hooks’ in your storytelling. Introduce characters using skits and plays. How about a science experiment as an object lesson? Look for ways to use children’s curiosity to engage them in your program.
What is a boomerang, how does it work, and what does it have to do with the Bible? These great questions are answered in a Super Sunday lesson: Boomerang! https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Boomerang-Gods-Word-Does-Not-Return-Void.pdf
A Language of Play
Play knows no borders. It leaps over language barriers and cultural differences with astonishing ease. In rural villages and city schools alike, children communicate through tag, hopscotch, ball games, and imaginary adventures. A skipping rope becomes a bridge between continents. In play, children learn to negotiate, cooperate, and simply enjoy being alive. As much as I’m no sportsperson, I acknowledge that most children love games, so I include a game with every Cooee Kid’s Ministry lesson. I also use a lot of games in Memory Verses.
A whole program filled with ball games? Yep, it’s a Super Sunday lesson called ‘Throw It to Me!’ https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Throw-It-To-Me.pdf
The Need to Belong
At the heart of every child is a longing for connection—for someone to notice, love, and believe in them. Whether huddled around a fire with siblings or riding to school on a crowded bus, children seek the comfort of community. Family, friends, and mentors all help shape their sense of worth. As leaders and volunteers in Kid’s Ministry, we are in a privileged position to demonstrate God’s love and acceptance, especially to those children who have challenging behaviour and can act like they don’t want it.
A Day in the Art Gallery is a Super Sunday where children learn they are God’s masterpiece: https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/A-Day-in-the-Art-Gallery.pdf
Another lesson about God being in control, no matter what others say, is the Super Sunday lesson, ‘The Tribe Has Spoken?’ https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/The-Tribe-Has-Spoken.pdf
The Spark of Faith
Children look toward something greater with wide-eyed wonder. They pray simple prayers, ask questions, and engage with faith in ways that remind us of its purest form. Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matthew 18:3) Children are open, honest and joyful. Their childlike faith is humble. Whether learning Bible verses in a Kid’s Church in Brisbane or listening to Bible stories in a jungle village, children want to know about Jesus. They will take Him at His word!
Super Sunday lesson ‘Oh, Taste and See!’ asks children to ‘sample’ God and to experience Him for themselves. https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Oh-Taste-and-See.pdf
‘God’s Kingdom: How Do I Get In?’ offers a royal invitation! https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Gods-Kingdom.pdf
Growing in Hope
Despite hardship or privilege, joy or grief, children look to the future with an astonishing resilience. Hope sprouts naturally in them. They imagine a world where they’ll become astronauts, singers, scientists, or simply grown-ups who make things better. Paul writes in Romans 15:13, ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace.’ As God fills us with the blessings of His joy and peace in believing in Him, we are equipped to live in this common bond of unity God calls us too, no matter what age we are or where we live. Our hope is in Jesus.
A Super Sunday lesson about being fuelled by the Holy Spirit is: ‘Don’t Run on Empty’ https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Dont-Run-on-Empty.pdf
And ‘The Green and the Gold’ teaches children to persevere like a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/The-Green-and-the-Gold.pdf
I never cease to wonder at where in the world lessons I’ve written here on the coast of Queensland, Australia, are downloaded. It’s because children are children wherever they are. As Christian leaders and volunteers, we understand their importance to Father God, and we’ll search out lessons to show children how much He loves them!
