True Blue Australian Bible Lessons

G’day!  A cooee call is synonymous with the Australian bush.  A cooee can travel over a long distance so it’s used to attract attention and ideal for letting others know where you are.  Coupled with the Scripture from Jeremiah 33:3 (Call to me, and I will answer you and show you great and might things which you do not know) I knew it was the right name for a website that would serve children’s ministries around Australia.

It’s been a blessing to see so much of the material downloaded by children’s ministries around the world.  Although I live in Australia, and inevitably lessons and stories will have a sense of Aussie-ness about them, I know it’s because I am part of God’s Kingdom that leaders can use the lessons no matter where they live.  And we’re all about seeing God’s kingdom advance here on earth!

In celebration of Australia Day on the 26th January, here’s a collection of my most outright true blue Australian lessons.  Perfect for Australia Day celebrations, Fun Days, Super Sundays or maybe part of your Missions curriculum.

Boomerang!

The newest Kid’s Church lesson for celebrating Australia Day.  Children learn about the boomerang and its uses by indigenous Australians.  The boomerang reminds us that when God sends out His Word, it does exactly what it’s meant to do.  Just look at Creation!  Children can trust all of God’s promises.  Especially the best promise ever…Jesus.  There’s a Memory Verse chant of Isaiah55:11:  ‘The same thing is true of the words I speak.  They will not return to me empty.  They made the things happen that I want to happen, and they succeed in doing what I send them to do.’  It can be accompanied by the sound of boomerangs clapping together.  Play a game of Kangaroo Tag followed by children making a boomerang from cardboard, decorating it in their own unique style.

Wattle You Do?

A lesson based on the Australian wattle tree (Acacia) that need a bush fire to germinate.  It’s Australia’s national flower and on the coat of arms.  Sometimes, even Christians will have experiences that feel like going through a fire, the same as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.  Play a game of Hot and Cold to find the words of the Memory Verse:  So what should we say about this?  If God is for us, no one can stand against us.  And God is with us. (Romans 8:31)  Follow up with a game of Hot Potato and then make a Pompom Wattle craft to take home.

Eureka!

Jacko and Sonny are prospecting in the gold fields.  Discovering a nugget of raw gold, Sonny finds it hard to believe a rock like that could be refined to become something as beautiful as a piece of jewelry.  A touching lesson about loss and grief, incorporating the story of Job, for kids who are suffering.  There’s a hunt for gold to find the Memory Verse from 1 Peter 1:7b ‘But the purity of your faith will bring you praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is shown to you.’  Play a game of Nab the Nugget and for Craft ice biscuits to decorate with gold sugar sprinkles.

God Is Bigger Than Your Mistakes

Meet Daryl the Postie who knows a thing or two about stamps.  He shows off his very different collection of stamps that were mistakes and now worth thousands of dollars!  Download the PowerPoint presentation ‘Daryl’s Really Different Stamp Collection’ to help you.  You’ll find it under Bible Lessons https://cooeekidsministry.com.au/bible-lessons/

When Darryl is invited to listen to the story of Samson.  Children negotiate an obstacle course to learn the Memory Verse:  Romans 8:28 ‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.’  Play a game of ‘I Wrote a Letter to My Love’ and for craft make a card to deliver or post.

A Day in the Art Gallery

Wayne (aka the Scorpion) is a security guard at the art gallery however things go wrong when he leaves the gallery to buy a meat pie for morning tea.  The curator of the gallery explains to the children they are all God’s work of art!  The Memory Verse from Ephesians 2:10 ‘For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them’, is in the form of a jigsaw puzzle the children piece together.  Play a game of Statues, and then paint a giant wall mural worthy of exhibition!
